Dr. Laura Schlessinger Racist Rant

Hi Everybody-
This is a link to the Dr. Laura radio program we were talking about in class today.
Disclaimer: This clip contains offensive language
The basic summary of this is an African-American woman calls up Dr. Laura, and they proceed to have a discussion about what is racist and what isn't. Dr. Laura offends the woman, goes to commercial break, comes back, and the argument continues.

Another interesting link:
ABS News' compilation of famous people who have been overheard spewing racist remarks:

  1. In a class I took last semester we looked at current events in Europe. This story stood out in my mind when Dr. Young was talking about racial etiquette.

    http://articles.cnn.com/2010-09-14/world/france.burqa.ban_1_burqa-overt-religious-symbols-ban-last-year?_s=PM:WORLD

The article is a reflection of a law the French senate passed in regards to banning burqas in public areas. I thought certain statistics were interesting: the vote, the muslim population in France, and the fine. The comparisons between the racial superiority and inferiority are like that of the United States in the late 19th century through the middle of the 20th century.

I believe the notion of what it means/meant to be "American" and what it means to be "European" are at the core of these racial prejudices. The need and want to identify with a certain group, the superior group, has caused a feeling of bigotry, ignorance, and separation between classes, ethnicities, races, and religious practices. As we shift from the haunting shadows of the past into a future that is expected to be centered around respect and acceptance, stories such as these, continue to detour progression. The same racist, arrogant, belittling feelings that were felt hundreds, even thousands of years ago, are in fact still present today.
